Over time, other spheres flung out to the corners of the universe sent reports back to the Olmec of many more inhabited worlds. They reported back with fantastic images of rich cultures and intelligence comparable to their own. The collective consciousness looked on with interest at these diverse cultures spread across the universe, but after its failure with the Maytan, the Olmec had concluded never to interfere with another culture again, its lesson learnt and instead content with studying from afar.

Finally, another of the white spheres that had travelled out into deep space for many hundreds of years sent a report back to the Olmec of a brown dwarf star, which its computer intelligence had calculated was heading towards the Olmec home world, potentially grazing the atmosphere of their cocooned planet, threatening every single life on the planet including that of the all-encompassing machine. The collective consciousness carefully extrapolated trajectories, finally concurring with the sphere’s assessment and the decision was taken to finally abandon their world, a world that had protected them from the reality of living for so many years.

The one giant world-encompassing machine now became many, melting away from the surface, almost dripping into space. Casting itself into the solar system and harvesting the nearby asteroid belt, finding twenty suitably-sized rocks to colonise, pouring itself inside, lining the interior, and finally transporting the Olmec from their isolation on the planet, to the asteroids that the Olmec would call home for the next several million years …
